Lombok Surfing 101:

Lombok’s surf is heavily influenced by Indian Ocean swells, with the dry season (April to October) providing ideal conditions. The island’s wave breaks can be categorised into three main types: reef breaks, point breaks, and beach breaks.

The south coast of Lombok (Kuta Lombok) is particularly known for its variety of waves and good exposure to S-SW swell channels.

  • Reef Breaks: Formed when waves break over rocky coral reefs, these spots offer powerful and hollow waves sought after by experienced surfers.
  • Point Breaks: Occur when waves break along a point or headland, offering longer rides with more predictable patterns, suitable for both beginners and advanced surfers.
  • Beach Breaks: Found where waves break along sandy shores, these spots have more forgiving waves for novice surfers.

Understanding tides is crucial for planning your surfing adventure in Lombok. Different tide levels significantly affect wave quality and shape.

Low tides can expose reefs, creating shallow sections that are challenging or dangerous. Certain reef breaks work best during mid-to-high tides with enough water coverage. For more tips on this try Getting Dialled In: Ocean Tides and Surfing

Best Surf Camps in Lombok (for fast progression)

Most surfers stay around Kuta Lombok because it gives you easy access to the main surf zones, restaurants, scooter rentals, and boat launches.

That said, where you stay can massively change your surf trip experience.

Personally, I think progression-focused surf camps are one of the best ways to improve faster in Lombok — especially if you:

  • feel stuck at the same level
  • struggle with confidence
  • want local guidance
  • or just don’t want the stress of figuring everything out yourself

The right camp can shortcut months (or years) of frustration.

Especially in Indonesia where tides, reef breaks, crowds, and conditions can change quickly.

🏄 Xanadu Surf & Yoga – Best For Progression & Coaching

One of the better progression-focused setups I’ve come across in Lombok is Xanadu Surf & Yoga.

What I like about it is that it doesn’t feel like one of those party surf camps where everyone is just chasing waves and beers.

The whole setup feels much more intentional:

  • smaller coaching groups
  • video analysis
  • surf theory
  • progression-focused sessions
  • mindset and recovery work
  • and proper coaching around WHY things aren’t working in your surfing

Which honestly matters more than just surfing more hours.

They also cap the progression groups at small numbers, which is huge if you’ve ever been in overcrowded surf lessons where you barely get feedback.

The location is also ideal — tucked into Kuta Lombok with easy access to multiple surf breaks depending on conditions.

🌊 Best For Intermediate Surfers Wanting To Progress

If you already surf independently and want to improve your positioning, turns, wave selection, confidence, or overall surfing flow, their:

👉 8 Day Intermediate / Advanced Surf Progression Week

is probably the most aligned option.

What stood out to me was the focus on:

  • video analysis
  • surf theory
  • upper body mechanics
  • surf mindset
  • and actually understanding WHY you’re getting stuck in progression

A lot of surfers plateau for years because nobody ever explains the deeper mechanics properly.

This camp seems built around fixing that.

🌴 Best For Beginners & Relaxed Surf Trips

If you’re newer to surfing, travelling solo, or want something more relaxed with yoga and softer progression, their:

👉 Boutique Surf & Yoga Retreat

is a really good option too.

This setup feels more:

  • beginner-friendly
  • relaxed
  • social without being chaotic
  • and ideal if you want a surf trip that balances progression with recovery and island lifestyle.

The small coaching ratios are a big plus here too.

🛵 My Advice For Staying in Lombok

Don’t overthink trying to stay directly in front of the “perfect wave.”

Most people surf multiple areas while staying around Kuta anyway.

Scooters, boat transfers, tides, swell direction, and wind all affect where you’ll actually surf each day.

So for me personally:
I’d prioritise:

  • good coaching
  • good community
  • easy logistics
  • and somewhere you actually feel comfortable resting and recovering.

Especially if you’re surfing every day.
👉 it’s not magic — you still need to show up, paddle, and push through the uncomfortable sessions.

🎒 What To Bring To Lombok (What Actually Matters)

One of the biggest mistakes people make heading to Lombok is bringing the wrong gear.

Especially if you’re:

  • learning later in life
  • rebuilding confidence
  • surfing reefs for the first time
  • or trying to progress too quickly.

Lombok can be incredibly fun… but it can also humble you fast if your setup is wrong.

Here’s what I think actually matters most.

🏄 Bring More Board Volume Than You Think

This is probably the biggest one.

Most surfers bring boards that are too small for:

  • tropical heat
  • long paddle sessions
  • reef positioning
  • consistency
  • multiple surf sessions per day

Especially if you’re intermediate.

When I started surfing Indonesia, I realised pretty quickly that slightly more volume often meant:

  • more waves
  • more confidence
  • less fatigue
  • and way more fun

Mid-lengths, step-ups, and performance hybrids usually make far more sense than ultra-high-performance shortboards for most surfers.

🧢 Surf Hats Matter More Than You Think

I honestly resisted surf hats for years.

Now?
I use them constantly in Indonesia.

The tropical reflection off the water can absolutely cook your face during long sessions, especially if you’re surfing for hours at a time.

The key is finding one that:

🌞 Sun Protection Is Different In Indo

Most people underestimate how intense the UV feels once you’re surfing multiple sessions a day around boats, reef, and reflected tropical water.

Especially if:

  • you normally surf cooler climates
  • don’t wear hats
  • or rarely surf for 4–6 hours at a time

I learnt this the hard way over years of surfing Indonesia.

👉 Here’s what changed my approach:
How I Protect My Skin While Surfing

🩹 Reef Cuts Happen

Even mellow Lombok reefs can still slice you open if you get lazy around low tide.

Bring:

  • reef booties if you’re nervous
  • basic first aid
  • waterproof bandages
  • ear drops
  • and reef-safe antiseptic

You don’t need to be paranoid…

But little cuts become tropical infections surprisingly fast over there.

🛵 Don’t Overpack

Most people pack WAY too much for Lombok.

You’ll mostly live in:

  • bikinis
  • boardshorts
  • singlets
  • hats
  • and thongs anyway.

Light is better.

Especially if you’re moving around by scooter a lot.

Travel Tips: Getting to and Around Lombok for Surfers

Getting to Lombok

  • By Air: Direct flights from major Indonesian cities like Jakarta and Bali to Lombok International Airport.
  • By Sea: Fast boats from Bali’s Padang Bai harbor to Lombok’s Lembar Harbor. Pray it’s not a bumpy day …. It’s a long hour if you get seasick like me !

I’ve also rented a car in Bali and travelled across on the car ferry – but it’s a long journey; my pick these days is by air.

Getting Around Lombok

novotel lombok

Lombok offers stunning landscapes, pristine beaches, and world-class waves for surfers of all levels. Beyond surfing, immerse yourself in the island’s rich culture and natural beauty. Visit traditional Sasak villages, hike Mount Rinjani, explore the Gili Islands, and enjoy local cuisine.

If you’re on the fence about visiting, I’d recommend getting here sooner rather than later. Lombok is very rapidly progressing, with new villas and hotels popping up every month. Gone are the days when we used to call Lombok “the hidden Gem of Indonesia” or what Bali used to be. Its dramatically changed over the last 9 years since I visited last. But still has the vibe and charm that made me deeply resonate with it many years ago.

Whether it’s your first visit or one of many, Lombok leaves a lasting impression with its perfect waves, warm hospitality, and breathtaking scenery. Pack your board and get ready for an adventure in this Indonesian paradise.
