I remember standing in the car park getting ready for one of my first surf sessions after years away from surfing.

I’d forgotten how to put my wetsuit on properly.

At one point I genuinely had it on backwards.

As ridiculous as it sounds, that moment perfectly captured how I felt.

Not like an experienced surfer returning to the ocean.

Like a complete beginner.

For years surfing had been a huge part of my identity.

I planned trips around swell charts.

Travelled through Portugal, Morocco, France and Spain chasing waves.

Spent countless hours in the ocean.

Then life happened.

Pregnancy.

A C-section.

Single motherhood.

Years travelling Australia with my son.

Building a business.

Creating a different kind of life.

Before I knew it, five years had passed and I’d only surfed a handful of times each year.

I expected the biggest challenge to be fitness.

I was wrong.

The biggest challenge was confidence.

And what surprised me most was that returning to surfing wasn’t really about surfing at all.

It was about learning to let go of the person I thought I was supposed to be.

Quick Navigation

5 Things To Do Before Your First Surf Back

Choose a small, friendly day.

Use more board volume than your ego wants.

Focus on catching waves, not performance.

Accept that the first session may feel awkward.

Celebrate paddling out, regardless of how you surf.

Why Surfing After A Long Break Feels So Humbling

Most surfers expect to lose fitness after time away from the ocean.

What catches many people off guard is how quickly self-doubt appears.

You paddle out.

The waves feel bigger than they used to.

Your shoulders burn faster.

You hesitate on waves you once would have paddled for without thinking.

Suddenly the surfer you remember being feels very far away.

Many surfers returning after years away discover that confidence becomes a bigger challenge than fitness. If you’re learning or returning later in life, you may enjoy Am I Too Old To Learn To Surf?.

I spent a lot of time judging myself during those first sessions back.

I should be surfing better than this.

I used to surf all day.

I used to paddle circles around people.

I used to feel comfortable in bigger surf.

Sound familiar?

The problem wasn’t the conditions.

The problem was the comparison.

The Trap Of Comparing Yourself To Your Old Surfing Self

This is where I see many surfers get stuck.

Especially women.

Especially mothers.

Especially people returning to surfing after a major life change.

Every session becomes a comparison between who you are now and who you used to be.

You compare your fitness, confidence, wave count and performance.

And somehow you always come up short.

What we often forget is that we’re comparing ourselves to a completely different version of ourselves.

A version with different responsibilities, priorities and circumstances.

For years I thought I’d failed because I wasn’t surfing every day.

I wasn’t running retreats.

I wasn’t living the surf lifestyle I’d imagined.

But looking back, I wasn’t failing at all.

I was raising my son exactly the way I wanted to.

We watched dolphins pushing bait balls across empty bays, tracked Tasmanian devils through the Tasmanian bush and explored beaches most people will never know exist.

Looking back now, those years weren’t a failure.

They were some of the most meaningful years of my life.

The problem wasn’t my life.

The problem was the story I was telling myself about it.

Looking back, many of those stories had become automatic thought patterns, which is something I explore in Why Negative Thoughts Get Worse While Surfing.

Traveling to see Komodo Dragons in Indonesia.

My First Session Back

One of my first sessions back was at Redgate in Western Australia.

I remember feeling nervous before I even paddled out. Everything felt unfamiliar. I felt rusty and disconnected from the surfer I used to be.

Many women experience a similar feeling when returning to crowded lineups after time away from the ocean. If that sounds familiar, read Why Women Feel Intimidated in the Surf Lineup.

Then something unexpected happened.

A shark cruised past in the crystal-clear water.

Years earlier that probably would have sent me straight back to the beach.

Instead I felt excited.

Grateful even.

It reminded me that despite all the years away, the ocean still felt like home.

Not because I was surfing well.

Not because I was fit.

But because that connection had never really left.

What surprised me most was how much my body remembered.

Reading waves.

Positioning.

Ocean awareness.

Even my pop-up.

Those skills returned far faster than I expected.

The thing that didn’t return as quickly was trust in myself.

One of the ways this showed up for me was hesitation on waves I would once have paddled for without thinking. If you’ve experienced something similar, read How To Stop Pulling Back On Waves.

Confidence isn’t muscle memory.

Confidence is trust.

Trust in your body.

Trust in your decisions.

Trust in your ability to handle whatever happens next.

And that takes longer to rebuild.

Wave by wave.

Session by session.

For a long time I believed I’d fallen behind.

Other surfers were progressing, travelling, building businesses and surfing every day.

Meanwhile I was raising my son and only surfing occasionally.

Looking back now, I realise I wasn’t trying to return to surfing.

I was trying to return to an old identity.

Finding Ocean Connection In Other Ways

One of the biggest lessons I learned during my years away from regular surfing was that connection to the ocean doesn’t have to disappear just because you’re not surfing every day.

For a long time I thought surfing was the only way I could access that feeling.

The freedom.

The adventure.

The sense of being fully present.

But during those years travelling Australia with my son, I discovered those same feelings in other ways.

Photography became one of them.

What started as a creative outlet eventually led to ocean photography, surf photography, wildlife photography and countless hours spent exploring coastlines I might never have noticed otherwise.

I wasn’t always catching waves.

But I was still connected to the ocean.

And looking back, that connection helped make returning to surfing feel much less intimidating.

Sometimes we think we’re losing part of ourselves.

Often we’re simply expressing it differently for a season.

Don’t Wait For Perfect Conditions

One mistake I made repeatedly was waiting for the perfect opportunity to surf.

The perfect conditions.

The perfect schedule.

The perfect energy levels.

The perfect childcare arrangement.

The perfect weather.

The problem is that perfect rarely arrives.

A few weeks become a few months.

A few months become a few years.

The longer you stay disconnected from surfing, the harder it can feel to return.

If you’re coming back after a long break, don’t worry about having the perfect session.

Focus on having a session.

Even if it’s small.

Even if it’s messy.

Even if you only catch one wave.

Consistency rebuilds confidence far more effectively than waiting for perfect conditions.

Many surfers believe confidence comes naturally with experience, but in reality it often comes from learning how to stay calm under pressure. Read How To Build Ocean Confidence As A Surfer.

Practical Tips For Returning To Surfing After A Long Break

Uluwatu – Eternal Surfer

Start Smaller Than You Think You Need To

Leave your ego in the car park.

Choose smaller, friendlier conditions and focus on rebuilding confidence rather than proving anything.

Use More Board Volume

Most returning surfers catch far more waves and enjoy themselves more on a slightly bigger board.

There’s no shame in making things easier.

If you’re unsure what board to ride after a long break, my guide to the best surfboards for older women may help you catch more waves and rebuild confidence faster.

Focus On Wave Count

Don’t judge the quality of your surfing.

Focus on catching waves and reconnecting with the rhythm of the ocean.

Build Paddle Fitness Gradually

Your shoulders and paddling muscles will come back.

Be patient.

Trying to force it often leads to frustration or injury.

Improving mobility and shoulder function can also make the transition back into surfing feel much easier. I cover some of my favourite exercises in Best Mobility Training For Surfers.

Find Your Community

Returning to surfing can feel easier when you’re surrounded by supportive people.

Groups such as Surfing Mums Australia, women’s surf communities and local surf groups can provide encouragement, accountability and friendship.

Sometimes simply knowing you’re not the only one starting again can make a huge difference.

Rebuild Your Surf Fitness Without Burning Out

While confidence was my biggest challenge returning to surfing, paddle fitness was definitely the second.

The good news is that fitness usually comes back much faster than confidence.

If you’re struggling with paddling endurance, shoulder fatigue or simply feeling surf-fit again, following a structured surf-specific training program can make the transition much easier.

I’ve personally found the resources from Surf Strength Coach useful because they focus on helping everyday surfers build strength, mobility and longevity in the water rather than training like professional athletes.

Final Thoughts

Most people don’t need to become someone new.

They need to remove the pressure, beliefs, fears and identities that disconnect them from who they already are.

Returning to surfing taught me that the ocean had never left.

I’d simply spent a few years learning the same lessons in a different classroom.

Through awareness, nature, adventure and self-trust, we can create a life that feels more alive, connected and free.

Sometimes returning to surfing isn’t about getting back to who you were.

It’s about remembering who you’ve been all along.

For many women, becoming a parent changes not only how often they surf but also their relationship with the ocean. I share more of that journey in Surfing as a Single Mum.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long does it take to get back into surfing after a long break?

It depends on your fitness, experience and confidence. Most surfers find paddling fitness returns first, while confidence often takes a little longer.

Will my surfing skills come back after years away?

In many cases, yes. Skills such as wave reading, positioning and timing are forms of muscle memory and often return faster than expected.

What’s the hardest part of returning to surfing?

For many surfers it’s confidence rather than fitness. Comparing yourself to your old surfing ability can create unnecessary pressure and frustration.

Should I use a bigger board when returning to surfing?

Often yes. More volume generally means more waves, more fun and a faster return to confidence.

What if I’m returning to surfing after having children?

Start slowly and be patient with yourself. Many women find that confidence and consistency take time to rebuild, but the joy of reconnecting with surfing is often worth the effort.

Why Noseriding Feels So Good

Noseriding is one of the most iconic skills in longboard surfing. If you’re wondering how to noseride, the key is learning wave selection, positioning and footwork before you ever step onto the nose.

Noseriding isn’t just about standing on the front of a surfboard.

When everything comes together—the wave, the board and your timing—it creates a feeling of flow that’s difficult to describe. You’re no longer forcing turns or generating speed. Instead, you’re working with the wave and allowing it to carry you.

For many longboarders, noseriding represents one of the purest expressions of surfing. It’s less about performance and more about style, patience and connection with the wave.

The Basic Mechanics of Noseriding on a Surfboard

Noseriding is an art form that requires a deep understanding of the dynamics between the surfer, the surfboard, and the wave. At its core, noseriding entails perching yourself on the front end of the board, known as “the nose,” while maintaining control and stability. In order to achieve this delicate balance, several key factors come into play.

Firstly, a well-designed longboard with ample volume and a wider nose provides the necessary platform for noseriding. The increased volume allows for better buoyancy and stability when you shift your weight forward onto the nose.

If you want to master the waves and get out the back quickly, dive into this article on perfecting your turtle roll.

1. Choose the Right Wave

Not every wave is suitable for noseriding.

Look for long, peeling waves with a clean face and a defined pocket. Point breaks and mellow longboard waves are usually much easier to noseride than steep beach breaks.

The better the wave, the easier the noseride. Even the world’s best longboarders struggle to noseride on sections that don’t offer enough speed or shape.

If you’re learning, focus on finding waves that give you time to move around the board rather than trying to force a noseride on every wave.

Some of my favourite waves for practising longboarding and noseriding can be found around Lombok, Indonesia, where long peeling waves give you plenty of time to move around the board.

Read – Best Surf Spots in Lombok (Surf Map + Local Guide)

2. Stay in the Pocket

Most failed noserides happen because surfers move too far onto the shoulder.

The power that supports a noseride comes from the pocket. Stay high on the wave face and keep the tail engaged in the breaking section.

If you’re too far ahead of the wave, the board will often slow down, stall or pearl. Good noseriding happens when the tail remains connected to the wave’s power source.

A simple rule is this: if the wave isn’t helping you, you’re probably too far out on the shoulder.

3. Learn to Cross-Step

One of the biggest mistakes beginner longboarders make is shuffling their feet.

While shuffling might feel safer, it actually makes you less stable and often throws your weight off balance. Cross-stepping allows you to move smoothly and stay centred over the board.

Start by practising on land. Walk slowly with one foot crossing over the other and focus on staying relaxed and balanced.

The goal isn’t to rush to the nose. The goal is to move with control and confidence. Good noseriding starts with good footwork.

Good mobility through the hips, ankles and thoracic spine can make cross-stepping feel much smoother and more natural. Read – Best Mobility Training For Surfers

Some surfers also find yoga helps improve balance, body awareness and control while moving around the board. Yoga for Surfers: Will It Help You Surf Better?

4. Set Up the Noseride First

Longboard legend Kassia Meador once said, “Every good noseride starts with a good turn.”

Before you walk forward, your board needs to be trimmed correctly and positioned in the most powerful part of the wave.

Many surfers focus on getting to the nose too early. Instead, focus on creating the right setup first. A small adjustment in positioning or a well-timed turn can make the difference between a successful noseride and a quick nose dive.

The better your setup, the easier the walk to the nose becomes.

Equipment for Noseriding

5. Use the Right Board

While skilled surfers can noseride almost anything, traditional longboards make the learning process much easier.

Look for a board with plenty of volume, a wider nose and enough length to provide stability while walking forward. Many dedicated noseriders also feature a nose concave and a larger single fin to help keep the tail locked into the wave.

The right board won’t guarantee a noseride, but it can make learning far more forgiving.

6. Learn to Read the Wave

Great noseriders aren’t just reading their board. They’re reading the wave.

Look ahead and identify sections that are likely to peel cleanly and continue breaking. The best noserides often happen when you anticipate the wave rather than react to it.

If the section doesn’t look right, reset and wait for a better opportunity.

7. Start with Hang Fives

Most surfers dream of hanging ten, but hang fives should come first.

A hang five allows you to develop balance, timing and confidence while keeping more control over the board. Once you can consistently hold a hang five, moving toward a hang ten becomes much easier.

Master the basics and the more advanced noserides will follow.

Tips for those aspiring to master noseriding.

Start with a longboard designed for noseriding.

Practice on smaller waves to understand balance.

Focus on footwork, using techniques like cross-stepping.

Always respect the ocean and its power.

Common Noseriding Mistakes

If you’re struggling to noseride, you’re probably making one of these common mistakes:

Walking too early before the board is trimmed.

Moving too far onto the shoulder.

Shuffling instead of cross-stepping.

Looking down at your feet.

Trying to hang ten before mastering a hang five.

Focus on fixing one mistake at a time and your noserides will improve much faster.

Noseriding in Bigger Waves

As your confidence grows, you may eventually start noseriding in larger surf.

The same principles apply: good wave selection, staying in the pocket and moving with patience. The difference is that bigger waves leave less room for error and demand better positioning and timing.

If you’re pushing into larger surf, make sure you’re comfortable with wipeouts, hold-downs and ocean safety. Confidence in bigger waves often comes from preparation both in and out of the water. This is where surf-specific breath training and surf apnea training can be valuable tools for staying calm under pressure.

Remember, there is no rush. Master noseriding in smaller waves first and let the bigger days come naturally.

As the waves get bigger, confidence becomes just as important as technique. Learning how to stay calm during wipeouts and hold-downs can make a huge difference when progressing into larger surf. Read –How to Surf Bigger Waves With Confidence

Final Thoughts

Noseriding is one of the most rewarding skills in longboard surfing.

While hanging five or hanging ten may look effortless, successful noserides are built on wave selection, positioning, timing and patience. The more time you spend understanding the wave and moving confidently around your board, the more opportunities you’ll create to walk to the nose.

And perhaps that’s why so many longboarders become obsessed with it.

Noseriding isn’t about forcing a manoeuvre. It’s about finding flow, working with the wave and experiencing one of surfing’s most timeless sensations.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is noseriding in surfing?

Noseriding is the act of walking toward the front of a longboard and riding with your feet near or over the nose of the board while maintaining control on the wave.

What is a hang five?

A hang five is a noseriding manoeuvre where the surfer places the toes of their front foot over the nose of the surfboard while keeping their back foot further behind for stability.

What is a hang ten?

A hang ten occurs when both feet are positioned at the nose of the surfboard with all ten toes hanging over the front edge.

What type of board is best for noseriding?

Traditional longboards with plenty of volume, a wider nose and a larger single fin generally make noseriding easier and more forgiving.

Why do I keep falling when I try to noseride?

Most surfers fall because they move to the nose too early, position themselves too far on the shoulder, shuffle instead of cross-step or fail to keep the board in the pocket.

Is noseriding difficult to learn?

Like most surfing skills, noseriding takes practice. Focusing on wave selection, cross-stepping and proper positioning will help you progress much faster.

Why do I keep nose-diving?

Answer:
Nose diving, or “pearling,” happens when the surfboard’s nose submerges underwater, usually resulting in a wipeout. Common reasons include:

Improper Weight Distribution: Having too much weight forward when catching a wave can push the nose underwater.

Late Takeoff: Trying to catch a wave when it’s too steep can drive the nose down.

Board Design: Some boards, especially those with thinner noses, are more prone to nose diving.

Wave Reading: Misreading the wave’s break point or not adjusting your position accordingly can also lead to pearling.

How do you not nosedive on a steep wave?

Answer:
Avoiding nosedives on steep waves involves technique and timing:

Adjust Your Position: Move slightly back on the board to keep the nose elevated.

Angle Your Takeoff: Instead of heading straight for the beach, angle your board to the left or right, depending on the wave’s direction.

Paddle Harder: A burst of speed can help get the board’s front end over the wave’s steep section.

Lean Back: As you feel the wave picking you up, lean back slightly to counteract the downward force and keep the nose up.

Practice on Simulated Waves: If accessible, practicing takeoffs on wave machines can help you hone your technique in a controlled environment.

Surfing lingo refers to the specific terms and phrases surfers use to describe various aspects of the sport. It encompasses everything from wave conditions and manoeuvres to equipment and weather-related terminology.

Understanding this jargon is essential for any aspiring surfer who wants to immerse themselves in the surfing community. The importance of knowing surfing lingo goes beyond being able to communicate effectively with other surfers.

It serves as a marker of belonging and demonstrates one’s dedication and passion for the sport. Using correct surf slang shows respect for the culture and helps establish credibility among fellow riders.

One of the most recognised is the “shaka surfing” sign , often recognized by the extension of the thumb and pinky finger while the three middle fingers are curled into the palm, has become an emblematic gesture of Hawaiian culture and, by extension, the global surfing community.

Its origins are traced back to Hawaii, with various legends attributing its inception to a local resident with a deformed hand or a symbolic gesture used by fishermen. Regardless of its roots, the shaka has evolved to signify a myriad of sentiments including “hello,” “goodbye,” “take it easy,” and “right on.”

In the surfing world, it’s a gesture that embodies the spirit of “aloha” and camaraderie among wave riders. Today, the shaka continues to be an essential part of surf culture, symbolising peace, friendship, and the laid-back ethos of the surfing lifestyle.

Whether on the shores of Hawaii or the beaches of Australia, flashing a shaka is a universal nod to good vibes and mutual respect among surfers.
While diving into the fascinating world of surfing lingo is important, understanding the unspoken rules of the waves is just as crucial.

Surfing lingo acts as a unifying force within the tight-knit community of surfers. It serves as a shared language that connects individuals who share a common love for riding waves.

When two surfers exchange phrases like “stoked,” “shredding,” or “dawn patrol,” they instantly recognize each other as kindred spirits in their pursuit of perfect waves. Moreover, using surf terms fosters camaraderie among surfers by creating an insider’s club where only those familiar with the jargon can fully participate.

Whether it’s discussing wave conditions or sharing stories about epic sessions, speaking in surfer slang creates bonds between individuals who might otherwise be strangers. Surfing lingo also embodies the spirit and ethos of surfing itself.

Many of the terms reflect the thrill and excitement that comes with riding waves. From “tube” to “wipeout,” these words encapsulate the unique experiences and sensations that surfers encounter in the water.

By using this language, surfers celebrate and express their love for the sport, forging a strong sense of community that transcends geographical boundaries. Surfing lingo is not just a collection of words; it’s a gateway to becoming part of the vibrant surfing culture.

Understanding and using surf terms allows surfers to communicate effectively, earn respect within the community, and forge meaningful connections with fellow riders. So whether you’re a seasoned pro or just starting your journey on a longboard, embracing the rich tapestry of surfing lingo will undoubtedly enhance your experience in the water.

If you’ve ever been to a popular surfing spot, you might have noticed groups of surfers gathered in a specific area in the water. This congregation is known as the line-up – a crucial spot where surfers wait patiently for their turn to catch incoming waves.

It’s like being in a queue, but instead of waiting for groceries or tickets, surfers eagerly await their chance to ride towards shore on an exhilarating wave.
Board:

The board, also referred to as your trusty steed in surfer lingo, is every surfer’s most prized possession. It comes in various shapes and sizes depending on factors such as skill level and preferred style of riding.

From the classic longboard to the nimble shortboard, every surfer develops a deep connection with their board, forming an unspoken bond as they navigate the waves together.

For those just starting out on their surfing journey, choosing the right board can make all the difference. Before diving into the deeper waters of surfing lingo and culture, ensure you’re equipped with the best gear.
Leash or Legrope:

When you watch surfers slicing through the waves effortlessly, have you ever wondered how they manage to stay connected to their boards? The answer lies in a small but essential accessory called a leash.

This sturdy cord securely attaches one end to the tail of the surfboard and the other end to either the ankle or leg of the surfer. The leash acts as a lifeline, ensuring that even if you wipe out or get caught in a tumble of crashing waves, your beloved board remains close by.

Wax: Applied on the board’s surface for better grip

Imagine standing on a slippery board while trying to balance and ride incoming waves – it would be quite challenging and potentially disastrous! To prevent such scenarios, surfers rely on wax, which plays a crucial role in providing them with enhanced grip and stability.

Applied onto the deck of their boards in strategic patterns known as wax jobs, this sticky substance allows surfers to maintain control over their movements while riding those thrilling waves. Surfing is not just about catching waves; it’s also about embracing an entire culture packed with unique terminology and slang.

Understanding these basic surfing terms helps outsiders dive into this vibrant world of ocean enthusiasts. So whether you’re chilling in the line-up waiting for that perfect wave or carefully applying wax on your trusty board before hitting those breaks – remember that surfing lingo is more than just words; it represents a shared passion and love for riding nature’s liquid playground.

Hangin’ Ten and Rippin’ It

When it comes to surfing, carving is an essential skill that allows surfers to maneuver and ride waves with style and finesse. Two fundamental carving techniques are the cutback and the bottom turn.

The cutback, also known as “slashing,” involves a surfer changing direction sharply while riding a wave. Picture this: you’re riding down the face of a wave, feeling the power beneath your feet, then suddenly you carve back towards the breaking part of the wave, spraying water in all directions.

It’s a move that demands precision and perfect timing. Meanwhile, the bottom turn is like a dance move executed at high speed.

As you approach the bottom of a wave, imagine yourself leaning into it while simultaneously shifting your weight and redirecting your board upward. This technique not only enables surfers to gain speed but sets them up for other maneuvers such as off-the-lips or aerials.

If you’re looking to truly immerse yourself in the surfing culture and master the art, consider joining a surf camp. Especially for women, surf camps can be an empowering experience.

Defying Gravity with Surf Style

Aerial maneuvers are often considered the pinnacle of modern surfing, combining skill, creativity, and sheer audacity. There are various types of aerial tricks out there, but let’s focus on two exciting ones: floaters and air reverses. The floater is all about defying gravity while staying in control.

Imagine yourself riding on top of a breaking section of a wave rather than going through it. It requires precise timing to launch yourself onto that foamy section just as it starts to break.

Maintaining momentum and balance during this maneuver is crucial – one wrong move can send you plunging into an unforgiving watery abyss! Now let’s talk about air reverses – they are nothing short of mind-blowing.

It’s when a surfer launches off the wave and rotates mid-air, all while changing direction. The combination of technique and creativity required for air reverses is awe-inspiring.

Picture yourself launching off the lip of a wave, twisting and spinning like a ninja in mid-air, before landing smoothly back on the wave face. It’s an adrenaline rush that pushes the boundaries of what’s possible on a surfboard.

Surfing lingo is peppered with terms to describe these manoeuvres – you might hear surfers talking about “flaring” an air reverse or “ripping” through their cutbacks. The blend of technical skill and fearless attitude embodied by these moves truly showcases the freedom and artistry that surfing represents.

So, whether you’re perfecting your cutbacks or launching into aerial acrobatics, mastering these maneuvers takes practice, persistence, and a genuine love for the sport. Embrace the challenge, ride those waves with style, and let your imagination soar as you become one with the water.

Surfing Conditions and Weather Terms

Wave Quality: Riding the Perfect Wave

When it comes to surfing, wave quality can make or break your experience on the board. Clean waves are the holy grail of surfers, featuring a smooth face without any choppy sections. Picture yourself gliding effortlessly across the clean face of a wave, feeling the rush of adrenaline as you carve through its perfectly shaped walls.

However, Mother Nature doesn’t always cooperate with our surfing dreams. Sometimes waves can become crabbed, which means they break unevenly due to factors like wind or underwater obstacles.

Imagine paddling hard to catch a wave, only for it to crumble in front of you and leave you scrambling for balance. It’s a humbling experience that all surfers encounter at some point.

Another less desirable wave quality is mushy waves. These waves lack power and often result in slower rides.

It’s like trying to skate on wet cement instead of gliding effortlessly on ice – not exactly the thrill you’re seeking as a surfer. Mushy waves can be caused by various factors such as small swells or unfavorable tide conditions.

For those looking to dive deep into the world of surfing, Australia offers some of the best beaches and learning experiences.
Tides and Swells: Dance with the Sea’s Rhythm

Understanding tides and swells is essential for any serious surfer who wants to catch those epic waves consistently. Let’s start with high tide when the ocean water level reaches its highest point along the shore during a tidal cycle. During high tide, waves tend to break closer to shore and may have less power due to shallow water depth. For an in-depth look at tides and surfing, check this out.

Swell is another crucial element for surfers since it determines wave size and energy. Swell refers to long-period oceanic waves generated by distant storms or weather systems far out at sea.

When these swells reach coastal areas, they transform into rideable waves with varying sizes depending on the swell’s strength. Surfers eagerly anticipate large swells, as they create more powerful and thrilling waves to conquer.

Tidal shifts are now occurring due to climate change and can affect your local surf break. Read more about it here.

Conclusion

Surf camps for women have exploded in popularity over the last decade, and for good reason.

Whether you’re a complete beginner looking to catch your first wave or an intermediate surfer wanting to improve your skills, a women’s surf retreat can fast-track your progress while connecting you with like-minded surfers.

Many women attending their first surf retreat are also learning to surf after 40 and discover they progress much faster when surrounded by supportive coaches and like-minded surfers.

In this guide, I’ll cover the benefits of women’s surf camps, what to look for when choosing one and some of my favourite destinations around the world.

Are you preparing for your next surf trip ? Don’t forget to get your mind and body ready for those waves.

Why Choose a Women’s Surf Camp?

One of the biggest advantages of a women’s surf camp is the supportive learning environment.

Many women feel more confident asking questions, trying new skills and pushing outside their comfort zone when surrounded by other female surfers on a similar journey.

Women’s surf retreats often focus on much more than surfing alone. Many include yoga, mobility training, breathwork, photography, wellness activities and community experiences that create a memorable surf trip both in and out of the water.

Benefits of Surf Camps for Women

<img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="683" height="1024" class="wp-block-cover__image-background wp-image-2120" alt="women's surf camps

Faster Progress

Surfing every day with experienced coaches often leads to significant improvements in a short period of time.

Increased Confidence

Many women attend surf camps to overcome fears, improve ocean confidence and feel more comfortable in the lineup.

Many women also attend surf camps to overcome fears around crowded lineups and build confidence in the ocean, which I discuss further in Why Women Feel Intimidated in the Surf Lineup.

Community and Connection

Surf camps provide an opportunity to meet like-minded women who share a love of surfing, travel and adventure.

A Complete Surf Experience

Many camps combine surf coaching with yoga, breathwork, mobility sessions and local cultural experiences.

Breathwork and surf apnea training can be particularly valuable for surfers looking to feel calmer in bigger surf or challenging ocean conditions.

What to Look for in a Women’s Surf Camp

Not all surf camps are the same. Before booking, it’s worth considering a few important factors.

Your Surfing Level

Some camps cater to complete beginners, while others are designed for intermediate surfers looking to improve their technique. Make sure the coaching matches your current ability.

Coaching Quality

Look for camps that provide experienced surf coaches, small group sizes and personalised feedback. Video analysis can be particularly helpful for accelerating your progress.

Group Size

Smaller groups often mean more individual coaching and more waves during each session.

Accommodation Style

Women’s surf camps range from budget-friendly surf houses to luxury surf and yoga retreats. Choose an option that matches both your budget and travel style.

Extra Activities

Many surf retreats include yoga, mobility sessions, breathwork, photography, wellness workshops and cultural experiences alongside surfing.

If you’re planning a surf retreat in the coming months, spending some time on these surf mobility exercises can make paddling, pop ups and recovery much easier.

My Favourite Destination for a Women’s Surf Retreat: Lombok

If I had to recommend one destination for beginner and intermediate surfers, Lombok would be near the top of my list.

Unlike some of the busier surf destinations in Bali, Lombok offers a more relaxed atmosphere, warm water year-round and a huge variety of waves suitable for different ability levels.

One of the things I love most about Lombok is the progression available. Beginners can find soft rolling waves perfect for building confidence, while intermediate surfers have access to fun reef breaks and longer rides as their skills improve.

Beyond the surfing, Lombok offers beautiful beaches, incredible sunsets, local culture and a slower pace of life that makes it easy to settle into the rhythm of a surf trip.

Many surf camps and retreats operate throughout Lombok, ranging from beginner-friendly surf holidays through to surf and yoga retreats designed specifically for women.

If you’re considering Indonesia for your next surf adventure, I highly recommend spending some time exploring Lombok.

It’s also one of the destinations I recommend most often to women looking for quality waves without some of the crowds found in other popular Indonesian surf destinations.

Final Thoughts

A women’s surf camp can be one of the fastest and most enjoyable ways to improve your surfing.

Whether you’re learning to catch your first green wave, building confidence in the lineup or simply looking to connect with other women who love the ocean, the right surf retreat can be a transformative experience.

The best surf camp for you will depend on your surfing level, travel style and personal goals. Take the time to find a retreat that feels aligned with where you are right now, and don’t be afraid to step outside your comfort zone.

Some of the most memorable surf trips begin with a simple decision to book the ticket and paddle out.

Things to Consider When Choosing a Surfing Spot

When selecting a surf spot, it’s crucial to take a few factors into consideration. We’ll examine the key factors to keep in mind when selecting the ideal surf spot that matches your skill level and preferences.

Selecting the right surf spot can significantly influence your surfing experience. Whether you’re a seasoned pro or just dipping your toes into the world of surfing, there are key factors to keep in mind to ensure a safe and enjoyable time. Here’s a deeper dive into the essentials:

Wave Size and Shape: This is perhaps the most crucial factor.

For Beginners: Opt for spots known for their smaller, consistent waves. It’s essential to choose a location where the waves aren’t too powerful, allowing you to practice your balance and technique without being overwhelmed.

For Intermediate and Advanced Surfers: Look for locations offering a variety of wave sizes and challenges. Some might prefer powerful barrel waves, while others might look for long, rolling waves perfect for maneuvers.

Bottom Contour: The ocean floor plays a significant role in how waves break. Sandy bottoms are generally safer, especially for beginners, as there’s less risk of injury if you fall. Reefs or rocky bottoms can produce excellent waves but come with increased risks.

Tides: Understand how tides affect the surf spot. Some locations are best at high tide, while others might be preferable at low tide. Familiarize yourself with the local tide schedule and how it impacts wave conditions.

Crowd Factor: Some popular surf spots can become crowded, which can lead to competition for waves and potential collisions. If you’re a beginner, a less crowded spot might be more comfortable to practice without pressure.

Try to avoid the busy spots when learning to surf

Local Etiquette: Every surf spot has its own unwritten rules and etiquette. It’s crucial to be aware of and respect these for safety and to maintain a harmonious atmosphere in the water. Comprehensive Guide to Surf Etiquette

Access and Facilities: Consider how easy it is to reach the location. Is there parking available? Are there facilities like restrooms, showers, or rental shops nearby?

Safety: Always check for potential hazards like strong currents, hidden rocks, or marine life. If you’re unfamiliar with a spot, it’s a good idea to chat with local surfers or lifeguards to get insights into any specific dangers or tips.

Environmental Impact: Lastly, always be mindful of the environment. Stick to designated paths when accessing beaches to prevent erosion, avoid disturbing local wildlife, and always clean up after yourself. If you are interested in more ways to improve your environmental impact and boost your personal wellness have a look here.

Waves and Conditions , Local Surf Culture, Accessibility and Amenities

First and foremost, consider the waves and conditions at the surf spot.

For beginners, it’s important to choose a location with gentle, consistent waves that are suitable for learning. More advanced surfers may prefer more challenging waves and conditions to test their skills.

Local surf culture is another important factor to consider. Some surf spots have a more relaxed and welcoming atmosphere, making them ideal for beginners who are just starting out. Other spots may be more competitive, offering an exciting challenge for more experienced surfers.
