Quick Answer

If you’re wondering how to protect your skin while surfing, the biggest things that helped me were surf hats, smarter timing, and being more realistic about how much sun exposure surfers actually get.

After years of surfing in Australia and Indonesia — and eventually having basal cell carcinoma removed from my face — I realised sunscreen alone wasn’t enough for the way I surfed.

I still love the feeling of sun and salt water on my skin.

But these days I approach surf sun protection a lot differently than I did in my 20s.

If you surf a lot — especially in Australia or tropical places like Indonesia — protecting your skin matters more than most surfers want to admit.

What works best for me now is:

surf hats

avoiding long midday sessions when possible

broad-brim hats on land

selective sunscreen use

paying more attention to reflected sun off the water

I still love the feeling of sun and salt water on my skin.

I’m not someone who wants a complicated skincare routine, layers of clothing, or to surf covered head to toe every session.

But after having basal cell carcinoma removed from the side of my nose, I also can’t pretend I’m invincible anymore.

Jump to Section

Why Surfers Ignore Sun Protection

Why Surfing Is Different Than Normal Sun Exposure

Why Sunscreen Never Worked Well For Me

The Thing That Changed My Mind

What I Actually Do Differently Now

Why Surf Hats Changed More Than I Expected

Final Thoughts

Surf Culture Never Really Took Sun Protection Seriously

When I first started surfing, nobody really cared much about sun protection.

You wore:

a bikini

maybe some zinc on your nose

a Bintang singlet in Indo after you were already roasted

That was about it.

The surf industry back then didn’t have the same “sun-safe surf fashion” culture that exists now with long sleeves, pretty surf suits, and technical sun gear everywhere.

Most surfers I knew were just sunburnt all the time.

And honestly?

A lot of us wore it almost like a badge of honour.

Especially in Indonesia.

You weren’t paddling back to the boat every hour to reapply sunscreen or sitting under a tree checking UV levels from 10–3.

You were out there for waves.

Completely obsessed.

I’ve done sessions in Indo where I surfed for 6–7 hours straight without really thinking about anything except getting my fill before the tide changed or the wind came up.

When you love surfing that much, sun protection honestly becomes an afterthought.

Why Surfing Is Different Than Normal Sun Exposure

People underestimate how much sun surfers actually get.

It’s not just direct sunlight.

It’s:

water reflection

long sessions

wind

salt drying your skin out

tropical UV

boats

being in the water during the harshest part of the day

Indonesia was probably where I noticed this most. Long boat days, tropical reflection off the water, and surfing for hours without thinking about reapplying anything can absolutely cook your skin.

If you’re planning a trip there, this guide might help:
How to Score the Best Waves in Lombok

Even if you’re not someone who burns badly anymore, your face usually takes a beating over time.

That’s what happened to me.

When I first started surfing, I burnt pretty badly for the first year or two.

Then my skin adapted a bit, I built up more colour, and I stopped burning as much.

So mentally I almost stopped worrying about it.

But even when your body tans easier…

Your face still cops it.

Especially:

forehead

nose

cheeks

around the eyes

And once I hit my 40s, I started noticing my skin becoming more sensitive again too.

Sunscreen Never Really Worked Well For Me

This is probably where I’m different from a lot of surf articles online.

I never became someone who loved slathering sunscreen everywhere.

Most of the time I hated it.

Especially surfing.

Regular sunscreen:

made my board slippery

made my hands slippery

washed off anyway

stung my eyes

felt greasy in tropical heat

Zinc was even worse for me personally.

Most zincs made my skin itchy, dry, and irritated.

I’ve found one or two brands I can tolerate now, but overall I still don’t love the feeling of it.

And honestly?

I’m a pretty minimalist person.

I don’t wear makeup.
I hate complicated routines.
I barely wear shoes half the time.

I genuinely love the feeling of surfing in a bikini with the sun and salt water on my skin.

That freedom is part of why I love surfing so much.

So for years I basically convinced myself:
sunscreen was “good enough.”

Even though realistically…
I rarely reapplied it.

The Thing That Finally Changed My Mind

I had a spot near the side of my nose biopsied years ago.

It came back as basal cell carcinoma.

At first, I honestly didn’t rush to get it removed.

I tried alternative approaches for a while and left it much longer than I probably should have.

But eventually it started growing again.

And I knew I had to deal with it properly.

The removal ended up being a fairly decent cut with 10 stitches along the side of my nose and cheek area.

It got infected afterwards too, which definitely wasn’t fun.

The scar is still raised and tight now, although thankfully the actual cut healed very cleanly and could have been much worse.

Emotionally though?

I didn’t really go into self-hatred or panic about aging.

I actually have a lot of compassion for my body.

I see wrinkles, scars, and sun damage differently now.

When I see older surfers with weathered skin, part of me honestly thinks:
“you can tell they’ve lived outdoors and had fun.”

You can see the ocean in people sometimes.

And I actually like that.

But at the same time…

I also don’t want another 6cm cut in my face in the future if I can help it.

That changed things for me.

Not fear.

Just awareness.

What I Actually Do Differently Now

I still don’t surf covered head to toe in long sleeves and thick white zinc.

I still love the feeling of the ocean on my skin too much.

But I HAVE become smarter about protecting my face.

This is realistically how I protect my skin while surfing now without turning it into a full-time routine.

wear broad-brim hats constantly on land

use surf hats far more often

avoid harsh midday sun more when possible

pay attention to reflection off the water

use selective sunscreen more intentionally

And weirdly…

Surf hats became way more practical than I expected.

My Realistic Surf Sun Protection Setup

I still keep things pretty simple.

Here’s what I realistically use now:

A surf hat for long sessions or windy days

Broad-brim hats on land

Chemical sunscreen on my face during strong UV days

More awareness around midday sessions

Shade when I’m out of the water for long periods

Surfing earlier or later when possible

Nothing extreme.

Just small things that are easy enough to stick to long term.

Surf Hats Changed More Than I Thought They Would

Surf sessions at Byron Bay – Eternal Sufer

For years I thought surf hats looked awkward, annoying, or uncomfortable.

And honestly, some of them are.

Especially cheap ones that:

fall off

block your vision

slide backwards while paddling

feel like a parachute in the wind

But once you actually find one that works properly?

I break down the ones that actually stay on in real surf conditions here:
5 Surf Hats That Actually Stay On When Surfing

You stop thinking about it.

The biggest thing for me wasn’t even surfing.

It was daily life.

Wearing hats all the time stopped me needing sunglasses constantly.

I used to barely walk outside without sunglasses on — even in softer light.

Now I mostly wear hats instead and my eyes feel far less strained.

In the surf, they also:

stop my forehead frying

reduce glare

help during long sessions

stay on in wind better than normal hats

That last one matters a lot where I live.

Magnetic Island gets incredibly windy sometimes, and even my son wears surf hats constantly now because normal broad-brim hats just blow straight off.

The Reality Most Surfers Probably Know

A lot of surfers still don’t take sun protection seriously until something forces them to.

Because surfing feels free.

Wild.

Natural.

You’re not thinking about skin cancer when perfect waves are rolling through.

You’re thinking about:

one more wave

one more hour

better conditions tomorrow

not wanting to paddle in

I understand that mentality completely because I lived it myself for years.

And honestly?

Part of me probably still does.

That mindset of pushing through discomfort and ignoring what your body is telling you can show up in surfing in a lot of ways too — not just sun exposure.

I wrote more about that here:
Surfing and the Ego: Why Letting Go is Key to Better Surfing

But these days I try to balance that freedom with a bit more awareness too.

Not perfectly.

Just realistically.

Final Thoughts

I still love the sun.

I still love salt water on my skin.

I still don’t want a 14-step skincare routine or to surf covered head to toe every session.

But I also understand now that years of ocean exposure eventually catch up with you — especially surfing in Australia and Indonesia.

For me, the answer wasn’t becoming obsessive.

It was making small practical changes that actually fit my lifestyle.

Things like:

surf hats

smarter timing

broad-brim hats on land

protecting my face more consistently

Simple things I can realistically stick to.

Because honestly?

The best sun protection routine is usually the one you’ll actually keep doing.

The older I get, the more I realise surfing long-term is less about going harder every year and more about sustainability — physically and mentally.

FAQ

Do surfers really need sunscreen?

If you surf regularly — especially in Australia or tropical locations — some form of sun protection is important. Water reflection and long sessions increase UV exposure significantly.

Are surf hats worth it?

For long sessions, tropical surf, or windy beach days, absolutely. A good surf hat can reduce glare, help stop forehead burn, and reduce how much sunscreen you need on your face.

Why do surfers still get burnt wearing sunscreen?

Because surfing is different from normal beach exposure. Most surfers don’t reapply often enough, spend hours in reflected UV, and are focused more on waves than sun protection.

Is zinc or sunscreen better for surfing?

It depends on your skin and preference. Some surfers love zinc because it stays on longer, while others find it irritating or uncomfortable. For me personally, lighter chemical sunscreens combined with physical protection like hats works better.

Does surfing age your skin faster?

Long-term UV exposure absolutely impacts skin over time, especially in high UV countries like Australia. Most long-term surfers eventually become more aware of sun protection as they get older.

I didn’t think I needed a surf hat… until I started getting completely fried every session and squinting through half my surfs.

The first few I tried didn’t last long either.

One flew off during a duck dive.
Another slowly slid backwards every time I paddled.
And one somehow made surfing feel harder instead of easier.

Once you find a surf hat that actually stays on though, it changes everything.

You stop worrying about the sun every five minutes, your eyes relax, and you can stay out longer without feeling cooked by the end of the session.

If you surf in Australia, Indonesia, or anywhere with strong sun, a good surf hat makes a massive difference — especially for longer sessions, tropical surf trips, and midday surfs.

This guide covers the best surf hats that stay on when surfing, including bucket hats, surf caps, and hooded rashies that actually work in real conditions.

Quick Picks: Best Surf Hats at a Glance

Short answer?

Yes… but not all the time.

I don’t wear one every session.

If it’s an easy early morning surf or small clean waves, I’ll usually just go with sunscreen and keep it simple. Sometimes less gear just feels better.

But in the middle of the day — especially in tropical places like Indonesia or long sessions in the Australian sun — they make a huge difference.

After having basal cell carcinoma removed from my face, I started taking surf sun protection a lot more seriously — especially during long Indo sessions.

I wrote more about that here:
How I Protect My Skin While Surfing

That’s when I’ll always wear one.

A good surf hat:

keeps the sun off your face and neck

helps you stay out longer

actually makes the session more comfortable

A bad one?

It’ll fall off in the first duck dive and you’ll never wear it again.

Do Surf Hats Actually Stay On?

Honestly… some do and some definitely don’t.

That’s usually why people stop wearing them after one or two sessions.

Cheap surf hats often:

slide backwards while paddling

block your vision

come off during duck dives

flap around in the wind

become more annoying than helpful

The biggest difference comes down to:

chin strap design

brim shape

overall fit

whether the hat was actually designed for surfing

The good ones become something you barely think about while you’re in the water.

The bad ones make every session frustrating.

That’s why I’d rather spend a bit more on something designed specifically for surf conditions than keep replacing cheap hats that never really work properly.

Who This Guide Is For

This guide is especially helpful for surfers who:

burn easily in the sun

surf in Australia or tropical climates

want surf hats that actually stay on during duck dives

are learning later in life

surf for enjoyment rather than performance

want more comfort during longer sessions

get frustrated by bulky gear

want better visibility in bright conditions

A lot of women stop wearing surf hats because the first one they buy constantly falls off, blocks their vision, or feels awkward in the water.

The right surf hat should make surfing easier — not more annoying.

When I DON’T Wear One

Bigger, heavier surf (too much duck diving)

Quick, easy sessions

Early mornings or late afternoons

I’d rather just use a solid zinc sunscreen for those

When I DO Wear One

Midday surf

Long sessions

Tropical surf trips (like Indonesia)

When the sun is relentless

That’s where they’re 100% worth it

I also find myself reaching for hats more when body surfing and spending long sessions swimming around in the ocean.

Read: Body Surfing With a Hand Plane

The Key Thing Most People Get Wrong

It’s not about whether surf hats work…

It’s about getting one that actually stays on

Because if it doesn’t:

you won’t trust it

you won’t wear it

Types of Surfing Hats

Types of Surf Hats (What Actually Works)

Type

Best For

Pros

Cons

Bucket Hat

Long sessions, sunny conditions, all-round use

Great sun coverage, comfortable, stays on with a good strap

More drag in bigger surf

Surf Cap

Bigger surf, duck diving, performance sessions

Low profile, less drag, stays on well

Less sun protection

Hooded Rash Vest

Long sessions, sun-sensitive skin, simplicity

Full coverage, no separate hat needed

Warmer, less flexible to remove

Legionnaire Style

Strong sun, long paddle sessions

Maximum neck protection

Less streamlined in waves

Snapbacks

Beach, post-surf

Stylish, casual

Not made for water, won’t stay on

When choosing the right surf hat, consider the climate, water temperature, and your comfort. Whatever your preference, wearing a suitable surf hat is an essential part of staying safe and enjoying your time in the water.

Surf Hat

Best For

Why It Works

Boardsox Surf Hat

Long sessions + all-round use

Comfortable, secure, soft rear brim, great visibility

Oz Smart – Surf Bucket

Beginners

Affordable and easy starting option

Roxy WR UV Surf Cap

Lightweight everyday use

Less bulky and easy to wear

Plow Surf Cap

Women wanting a stylish surf cap

Comfortable, subtle style and good visibility

One thing I didn’t really think about at first…

I actually use my surf hat a lot in windy conditions at the beach, and traveling to and from the surf – not just when I’m surfing.

Because they clip on securely, they don’t blow off like normal hats — which makes them surprisingly useful for:

hanging out on the beach

watching the surf

chasing kids around

cruising on a moped

I use mine all the time for this, and my son wears one for the same reason.

It’s a small thing, but it makes them way more practical than a regular hat.

Honestly, a lot of my resistance to surf hats was tied to not wanting to stand out or look different in the lineup.
Read: Why Women Feel Intimidated in the Surf Lineup

Best Overall Surf Hat for Women

This is the kind of surf hat that feels designed by people who actually spend a lot of time in the water.

The biggest thing I like about the Boardsox hats is the soft rear brim. It sounds minor, but it stops the hat pushing up over your eyes while paddling — which is one of the most annoying things about a lot of surf hats.

The hard front brim still gives you proper shade and cuts glare on the water, but the softer rear section makes it feel way less frustrating during longer sessions.

It also feels lighter and more comfortable than a lot of bulky surf hats, especially if you’re surfing for enjoyment rather than trying to charge heavy waves all day.

If you want extra protection, the Carissa version with the hard shell insert is worth looking at too.

Pros

Comfortable for long sessions

Soft rear brim improves visibility while paddling

Stays secure in surf

Good balance of coverage without feeling bulky

Designed specifically for real surf conditions

Cons

More expensive than basic surf hats

Wider brim creates a little more drag in bigger surf

Best Budget Surf Hat

If you mainly want solid sun protection without spending a fortune, this is a really practical option.

What I like about this one is that it still feels purpose-built for actual water use, not just a normal bucket hat pretending to be a surf hat.

The stiff front brim helps stop the hat collapsing over your eyes, and the adjustable chin strap keeps it surprisingly secure in windy conditions or smaller surf.

The removable neck flap is also really useful if you surf in strong Australian sun, tropical conditions, or spend long hours in the water.

It’s definitely more of a functional surf hat than a stylish one — but for long sessions and serious sun protection, it does the job well.

Pros

If you don’t like bulky surf hats or you mostly surf smaller, cleaner conditions, a lightweight surf cap like this can feel much easier to wear.

It’s lower profile, lightweight, and feels less intrusive while paddling or duck diving compared to a full bucket hat.

I also think this kind of style works really well for women with smaller heads or surfers who get annoyed by too much gear in the water.

You obviously get less sun protection than a full surf bucket hat, but for shorter sessions and everyday surfing, it’s a really nice balance between simplicity and protection.

Pros

Best Stylish Surf Cap for Women

A lot of surf hats look super technical or overly “surf bro.”

This one feels a bit different.

The Plow Surf Cap keeps the lower-profile surf cap feel, but still gives decent sun protection and visibility without looking bulky or awkward.

I also like that it was created with skin protection as a genuine focus, not just aesthetics.

The fit works especially well for women who want something simple, subtle, and comfortable enough to wear for longer periods without constantly adjusting it.

One thing that stood out from reviews was how many people mentioned visibility and comfort while paddling — which is honestly one of the biggest things that decides whether you’ll actually keep wearing a surf hat long term.

Pros

Comfortable low-profile fit

Good visibility while surfing

Stylish without feeling over-designed

Adjustable fit works well for smaller heads

Optional removable neck flap

Cons

Less coverage than a full bucket hat

Slightly more niche brand

Best For

Women wanting a more subtle surf hat

Smaller heads

Surfers who hate bulky hats

Long sessions in bright conditions

Glasses wearers struggling with glare

I’ve spent years searching for surf hats that actually stay on in the water. Plow Surf Co. has quickly become one of my favourites.

If you’re thinking about grabbing one, I’ve got a code for you: ETERNAL_SURFER.

Surf Cap vs Bucket Hat: Which Is Better?

This mostly comes down to:
coverage vs performance.

Bucket hats give better sun protection and are usually more comfortable for long sessions, tropical surf trips, and smaller surf.

Surf caps are lower profile, create less drag in the water, and usually work better in bigger surf or heavier duck diving conditions.

Personally, I tend to wear:

bucket hats for smaller surf, longboards, Indonesia trips, and relaxed sessions

surf caps for bigger surf or sessions where I know I’ll be duck diving a lot

Neither is “better.”
It just depends on the kind of surfing you’re doing.

Type

Best For

Main Benefit

Downside

Bucket Hat

Long sessions, sun protection

Better coverage

More drag

Surf Cap

Bigger surf, duck diving

Lower profile

Less protection

Are Surf Hats Hard to Duck Dive In?

Honestly… some are.

Bigger bucket hats can create drag, especially if you’re learning to duck dive properly or surfing punchier waves.

That’s usually when people stop wearing them.

A good surf hat should stay secure without constantly pulling backwards or blocking your vision underwater.

If I know I’m surfing bigger waves or doing a lot of duck diving, I’ll usually switch to a lower-profile surf cap instead of a wider bucket hat.

But for smaller surf, tropical trips, long sessions, or longboarding, the extra coverage is absolutely worth it.

Best Surf Hats for Women with Long Hair

One thing I didn’t think about until I started wearing surf hats regularly was how annoying some of them are with long hair.

Some straps pull awkwardly on ponytails, some hats shift around constantly, and others end up tangling your hair after long sessions.

For longer hair, I’ve found bucket hats with softer adjustable straps usually feel more comfortable than tighter performance surf caps.

If you wear your hair in a low ponytail or braid, hats with flexible rear adjustment straps tend to sit much better in the water.

It sounds minor, but when you’re already trying to relax in the surf, small comfort issues make a big difference.

How to Choose the Right Surf Hat

When it comes down to it, most people are choosing between two things:
coverage vs performance

If you want maximum sun protection and comfort → go a bucket hat

If you want something that stays out of the way in bigger surf → go a surf cap

The biggest mistake is choosing something that feels good on land but doesn’t hold up in the water.

Fit matters more than anything. If it’s loose, it’s gone.
Straps, brim shape, and how it sits on your head will decide whether you forget about it… or spend the whole session adjusting it.

What Actually Matters (Quick Recap)

A secure fit (non-negotiable)

Enough coverage for your conditions

A brim that doesn’t block your vision

Something you don’t have to think about while surfing

That’s it.

Everything else is secondary.

Keeping Your Surf Hat in Good Shape

You don’t need to overthink this.

Rinse it with fresh water after sessions

Let it air dry (not in direct sun all day)

Avoid throwing it in a hot car for days

Most hats fail because they get cooked and stiff over time — not because they were bad to start with.

Final Thoughts

A good surf hat is one of those things you don’t fully appreciate until you find one that actually works.

Once you do, you stay out longer, stop squinting through every session, and spend way less energy thinking about the sun.

The biggest thing is finding something comfortable enough that you genuinely want to wear it — because the best surf hat in the world is useless if it constantly annoys you in the water.

One of my biggest surf travel mistakes had nothing to do with fitness.

Read: How to Prepare for Your First Surf Trip

FAQ

Do surf hats actually stay on?

Some do, some definitely don’t.

The biggest difference is usually the chin strap, rear adjustment, and brim design. Lower-quality hats often slide backwards or come off during duck dives.

Are surf hats worth it?

If you surf in strong sun, tropical climates, or spend long hours in the water — absolutely.

They help reduce glare, protect your skin, and make long sessions much more comfortable.

What’s better: a surf cap or bucket hat?

Bucket hats give more sun protection.
Surf caps create less drag and usually work better in bigger surf.

Can you duck dive with a surf hat?

Yes, but some hats work much better than others.

Lower-profile surf caps are usually easier for heavy duck diving, while bucket hats are better for comfort and sun protection.

What surf hats are best for women?

The best surf hats for women are usually lightweight, adjustable, comfortable with long hair, and secure enough to stay on without constant adjusting.

Best Gift Ideas for Surfers (9 Gifts Surfers Actually Want)

Looking for the best gift ideas for surfers? As surfers, most of us already have drawers full of wax, old boardshorts and random surf accessories.

The gifts that make the biggest impact usually aren’t more stuff. They’re experiences, coaching, adventures and products that help us spend more time enjoying the ocean.

Whether you’re buying for a beginner surfer, an experienced wave chaser or a surfing mum, these are some of the best gifts surfers actually want.

#1. Go all out and get a Surf Trip.

Ask most surfers what they want and the answer is usually simple: more waves.

Receiving a surf trip as a present is a dream come true for any wave enthusiast. It’s not just the promise of riding new breaks or the thrill of uncharted waters that excites, but the sheer anticipation of adventure that such a gift brings.

Beyond the waves, it’s an opportunity to immerse oneself in a different culture, taste exotic cuisines, and meet fellow surfers from around the globe. Such a gift goes beyond the tangible; it’s an unforgettable experience, a memory in the making, and a testament to the giver’s understanding of one’s deepest passions.

Some of my favourite surfing memories have come from surf trips. If you’re looking for ideas, I often browse BookSurfCamps to find surf camps, retreats and surf holidays around the world. It’s a great place to compare destinations and find your next adventure.

Surf Camp Lombok

Surfing Australia

This is my favourite on on the list!

Such a cool idea, gifting someone surf coaching and video analysis is a thoughtful gesture that speaks volumes. It’s not just about enhancing one’s skills on the board, but it’s an investment in their passion and growth as a surfer.

Most surfers spend years trying to improve through trial and error.

A quality coaching session can help improve wave count, positioning, technique and confidence faster than buying another surfboard accessory.

3. Surf Apnea Training

For surfers wanting more confidence in bigger surf, wipeouts and hold-downs, surf apnea training can be life changing.

Learning how to stay calm under pressure and improve breath control benefits surfers of all levels.

4. Surf Photography Session

Most surfers have thousands of memories but very few quality photos of themselves surfing.

A surf photography session captures those moments forever while also providing valuable feedback on technique.

5. A Quality Surf Hat

A quality surf hat is one of the most practical gifts for any surfer. After spending years surfing in the Australian sun, protecting your face, ears and neck becomes increasingly important.

I’ve recently started using Plow Surf Co hats and love that they’re designed specifically for long days in and around the ocean.

Surf-specific fitness programs help improve paddling endurance, mobility, strength and recovery.

Hand planes are one of the most underrated gifts for surfers.

They’re fun, affordable and a great way to enjoy the ocean when the waves are small or crowded. They’re also fantastic for introducing kids to riding waves.

A hand plane is one of my favourite gifts for surfers, especially kids. It’s a simple way to build ocean confidence, learn how waves work and have fun even when conditions aren’t ideal for surfing.

Shark Eyes

For surfers who spend a lot of time in the ocean, peace of mind can be a valuable gift.

Shark Eyes are designed to help reduce the risk of shark encounters by using visual deterrent technology that may make surfers less appealing to certain shark species. While no shark deterrent can guarantee protection, many surfers appreciate the extra confidence they provide when surfing, swimming or exploring remote coastlines.

For surfers who struggle with shark anxiety, it can be a thoughtful gift that helps them spend more time enjoying the ocean and less time worrying about what might be beneath them.

9. Balance Boards

Surf-specific balance boards like the Revbalance Swell 2.0 are perfect for surfers who want to practice their balance and coordination when there are no waves to ride or when they’re not using their surfboard fins. These boards help surfers develop the core strength, stability, and flexibility needed for success in the water.

A balance board is a great gift for any surfer looking to improve their skills and stay sharp between swells.

Most surfers don’t panic underwater because they’re running out of oxygen.

They panic because their body interprets the situation as dangerous long before it actually is.

I learned this after a bad wipeout in Indonesia that left me questioning my confidence in bigger surf.

Like many surfers, I realised my surfing ability and my confidence weren’t always at the same level.

That experience eventually led me to surf apnea training.

What surprised me wasn’t how much longer I could hold my breath.

It was how much calmer I became.

Surf apnea training isn’t about becoming a freediver.

It’s about learning how to stay calm when things don’t go according to plan.

Whether you’re preparing for your first overhead day, trying to overcome anxiety in bigger surf or simply want more confidence in the ocean, surf apnea training can be an incredibly valuable tool.

What Is Surf Apnea Training?

Surf apnea training teaches surfers how to stay calmer and more controlled when they can’t immediately get a breath.

Using a combination of breath-control exercises, CO₂ tolerance training and practical water-based drills, surfers learn how their body responds under pressure and how to avoid panic when things don’t go according to plan.

Despite the name, surf apnea training isn’t about becoming a freediver or holding your breath for extreme lengths of time.

For most surfers, it’s about building confidence, improving ocean awareness and feeling more prepared when conditions become challenging.

Most surfers don’t start surf apnea training because they want to hold their breath for three minutes.

They start because they want to feel more confident in the ocean.

For me, surf apnea training wasn’t about becoming a freediver. It was about overcoming the fear and uncertainty that followed a bad wipeout and learning to trust myself again when conditions got bigger.

Many surfers discover that the biggest benefit of surf apnea training has very little to do with breath-hold time.

Instead, they begin to:

Feel calmer when a larger set appears on the horizon.

Recover more quickly after a wipeout.

Reduce panic when caught inside.

Build confidence in bigger surf.

Develop a healthier relationship with fear and uncertainty in the ocean.

Trust their ability to handle challenging situations when things don’t go to plan.

The goal isn’t to eliminate fear completely.

The goal is to replace panic with preparation.

Like any form of training, surf apnea should be learned and practised safely. Breath-hold training carries risks if performed incorrectly, which is why proper instruction, safety procedures and supervised practice are so important.

With the right training, surf apnea can become one of the most

The Science Behind Why Surf Apnea Training Works

One of the most surprising things I learned through surf apnea training is that most surfers don’t panic because they’re running out of oxygen.

They panic because rising carbon dioxide levels trigger an overwhelming urge to breathe.

Understanding this changed the way I approached hold-downs completely.

When we hold our breath, oxygen levels slowly decrease, but carbon dioxide levels rise much faster. It’s this increase in carbon dioxide that creates the uncomfortable feeling most surfers experience during a breath hold.

The good news is that your body can adapt.

Through structured surf apnea training, your body becomes more comfortable with elevated carbon dioxide levels, helping you stay calmer when situations become stressful.

This doesn’t make you invincible, and it doesn’t eliminate fear.

What it does is help you respond more calmly when fear shows up.

For surfers, that can mean the difference between panic and staying composed during a hold-down or difficult wipeout.

Many wipeout fears become easier to manage once you understand what is actually happening inside your body. Fear often comes from uncertainty. The more familiar you become with the physical sensations of breathlessness, stress and adrenaline, the less power they tend to have over you in the water.

Physiology of breath-holding

When it comes to surf apnea training, understanding the physiology of breath-holding is crucial. When we breathe in, our lungs take in oxygen that gets transferred into our bloodstream.

Carbon dioxide, a waste product of metabolism, is expelled when exhaling. This delicate balance between oxygen and carbon dioxide is essential for maintaining proper bodily functions.

Role of oxygen and carbon dioxide in the body

In surf apnea training, we focus on manipulating this delicate balance between oxygen and carbon dioxide levels within our bodies. Oxygen is necessary for energy production and supplying muscles with the fuel they need during physical exertion, like surfing or breathing underwater.

On the other hand, carbon dioxide triggers breathing by stimulating the respiratory centres in our brains.

During breath-holding, as carbon dioxide levels increase due to metabolism, receptors within our body signal that it’s time to breathe again.

These signals become more pronounced as time goes on and can lead to contractions – involuntary muscle spasms that attempt to force you to take a breath.

How the body adapts during breath-holding

Through surf apnea training exercises like dry, static apnea on land or in a controlled environment, your body gradually adapts to prolonged periods without breathing by becoming more efficient at conserving oxygen and tolerating higher levels of carbon dioxide build-up.

Over time, your tolerance will improve as your body becomes accustomed to these conditions.

During intense situations in extended breath-holds or a surfer hold-down scenario where you’re caught underwater by a wave, these adaptations can make all the difference between panic and calmly enduring the situation until you can resurface.

Techniques for Improving Breath-Holding Capacity

Diaphragmatic Breathing Exercises: Expanding Your Lung Capacity

This is one of the first techniques I teach surfers because it’s simple, practical and immediately useful both in and out of the water.

One of the most effective techniques to achieve this is diaphragmatic breathing, also known as deep belly breathing.

Unlike shallow chest breathing, diaphragmatic breathing allows you to engage your diaphragm muscle and expand your lung capacity fully. To practice this technique, find a comfortable position, sitting or lying down.

Place one hand on your chest and the other on your abdomen. As you inhale deeply through your nose, focus on pushing out your abdomen while keeping the chest relatively still.

Feel the breath fill up your belly like a balloon expanding. Exhale slowly through pursed lips, allowing the abdomen to deflate naturally.

Aside from expanding lung capacity, diaphragmatic breathing promotes relaxation by activating the body’s parasympathetic nervous system, reducing stress and anxiety that might hinder breath control during intense surf sessions.

Regular practice of this technique can improve overall respiratory function, improve ventilation,, and oxygen efficiency.

Dry Apnea Training: Building Confidence Before You Enter the Water

Many surfers assume they need to start training in the water.

In reality, some of the most valuable surf apnea training happens on land.

Dry apnea training allows you to safely learn how your body responds to breath holds, rising carbon dioxide levels and the urge to breathe without the added stress of waves, currents and hold-downs.

For many surfers, this is where confidence begins.

By practising breath holds in a controlled environment first, you can build strength, mind control and endurance without the added complexities of being underwater.

To begin with, dry static apnea training, find a quiet space to focus without distractions. Assume proper posture by sitting or lying down with good back support and relaxed muscles.

Take slow and deep breaths before starting each hold. Start with a duration that feels comfortable for you, perhaps around 30 seconds to a minute.

Gradually increase the duration of each breath hold over time, ensuring you maintain good relaxation and posture throughout.

As you progress, incorporate contractions into your training to simulate the water pressure experienced while surfing.

Understanding Contractions: Embrace the Discomfort

During longer breath holds, you may encounter contractions – involuntary muscle movements that can be uncomfortable or even alarming to some surfers.

Many surfers are surprised to learn that contractions are normal and don’t mean you’re running out of oxygen. Understanding this can be one of the biggest confidence boosts in surf apnea training because it helps remove the fear associated with the sensation.

They are a natural response of the body to increased carbon dioxide levels. Contractions signify that your body is adapting to low oxygen conditions and trying to conserve energy.

While contractions might initially feel unnerving, it’s crucial to understand their significance in surf apnea training.

By embracing and accepting contractions as part of the process, you can train your body to tolerate them and maintain calmness during challenging situations like being caught in a hold-down.

For more information on CO2 training, I have an article dedicated to that here.

Safety Precautions: Train Responsibly

Safety should be the top priority in any physical training while practising contraction exercises for surf apnea training. It’s crucial to listen carefully to your body’s signals and never push yourself beyond reasonable limits.

Ensure you have an experienced partner or instructor nearby who can assist. Always conduct these exercises in a safe environment, such as a swimming pool, or with proper supervision if practicing in open water.

Remember that breath-holding abilities are built gradually over time through consistent practice. Rushing into intense breath hold training exercises requires proper preparation to avoid unnecessary risks or injuries.

Prioritise gradual progression and prioritise safety when engaging in dynamic breathing and apnea in surf training.

By incorporating diaphragmatic breathing techniques and dry static apnea training exercises, surfers can significantly enhance their breath-holding capacity and improve overall performance in the water.

Remember, the goal of surf apnea training isn’t just to hold your breath for longer.

It’s to develop the confidence, awareness and composure to stay calm when things don’t go according to plan in the ocean.

Like any skill, progress comes from consistency, patience and proper safety practices. Focus on gradual improvement and you’ll be surprised how quickly those gains begin to carry over into your surfing.

How Surf Apnea Training Improves Your Surfing

Many surfers first discover surf apnea training because they’re worried about hold-downs.

What often surprises them is how many other areas of their surfing improve as well.

More Confidence in Bigger Surf

One of the biggest benefits of surf apnea training is confidence.

When you understand how your body responds under pressure and learn techniques to stay calm, larger surf often feels far less intimidating.

Many surfers find they become more willing to paddle out, catch waves and push their comfort zone because they trust themselves more in difficult situations.

Staying Calm When Things Go Wrong

Every surfer gets caught inside eventually.

Every surfer gets wiped out.

The difference is often how you respond.

Surf apnea training helps surfers develop the ability to slow down, manage stress and avoid panic when things don’t go according to plan.

These skills can make a huge difference when conditions become challenging.

Improved Ocean Confidence

Many surfers notice that their overall comfort in the ocean improves through breath training.

Spending time underwater, learning breath control and becoming familiar with the sensations associated with breath holding can help reduce anxiety and build trust in your abilities.

Better Decision Making

When fear takes over, decision making often suffers.

By improving your ability to stay calm under pressure, surf apnea training can help you make better choices in the water, from positioning and wave selection to knowing when conditions are beyond your current ability.

At the end of the day, surf apnea training isn’t really about holding your breath.

It’s about becoming a calmer, more confident surfer.

Don’t let your ego get in the way. If you want to know more about ego and surfing, check out this post.

CO₂ Tolerance Training for Surfers

One of the most valuable skills surf apnea training teaches is how to become more comfortable with the urge to breathe.

Many surfers assume they panic during a hold-down because they’re running out of oxygen.

In reality, the discomfort usually comes from rising carbon dioxide levels in the body.

CO₂ tolerance training helps surfers become familiar with this sensation in a safe and controlled environment.

Over time, many surfers find they can stay calmer during wipeouts, recover more effectively after a hold-down and feel more confident when conditions become challenging.

Progressing Safely

Like any form of training, CO₂ tolerance work should be approached gradually.

Beginners should start with simple breath-hold exercises and focus on relaxation rather than chasing long breath-hold times.

As confidence and experience grow, training can become progressively more challenging.

The goal isn’t to become a freediver.

The goal is to develop confidence, composure and trust in your ability to stay calm when things don’t go according to plan in the ocean.

If you’d like to learn more, I’ve put together a complete guide to CO₂ tolerance training for surfers, including beginner-friendly tables, safety guidelines and progression strategies.

Who Should Learn Surf Apnea Training?

You don’t need to be a big-wave surfer to benefit from surf apnea training.

In my experience, the surfers who often gain the most are:

Intermediate surfers looking to build confidence.

Surfers who struggle with hold-down anxiety.

Women who feel intimidated when conditions get bigger.

Surfers returning after a long break from the ocean.

Teenagers learning to trust themselves in the water.

Anyone wanting to feel calmer and more prepared in challenging surf.

If you’ve ever found yourself hesitating on a wave you knew you could catch, surf apnea training may help bridge the gap between your ability and your confidence.

The goal isn’t to become fearless.

The goal is to develop the skills and trust needed to stay calm when things don’t go according to plan.

My Experience with Surf Apnea Training

I completed my surf apnea instructor training through Apnea Survival on the Gold Coast and it completely changed the way I approached surfing.

Before attending the course, I was interested in improving my breath-hold ability and becoming more comfortable in challenging situations in the ocean.

What surprised me most wasn’t the physical side of the training.

It was learning how much of breath holding is mental.

Understanding how the mind responds to discomfort, stress and the urge to breathe gave me a completely different perspective on confidence in the water.

The skills I learned have helped me feel calmer during hold-downs, more comfortable in bigger surf and more confident when conditions push me outside my comfort zone.

It’s one of the reasons I became an instructor myself and why I’m passionate about sharing these tools with other surfers looking to build ocean confidence.

Before I discovered surf apnea training, I thought confidence in the ocean came from spending more time in bigger waves.

What I eventually realised was that confidence comes from preparation.

The more I understood my body’s response to stress, the calmer I became when things didn’t go according to plan.

That’s what surf apnea training has given me.

Not superhuman breath-hold times.

Not fearlessness.

Just a deeper sense of trust in myself and my ability to handle challenging situations in the water.

Whether you’re trying to overcome hold-down anxiety, prepare for bigger waves or simply feel more comfortable in the ocean, surf apnea training can be an incredibly valuable tool.

Like any skill, progress comes from patience, consistency and gradual exposure.

The goal isn’t to eliminate fear completely.

The goal is to stay calm enough to make good decisions when fear shows up.

FAQ’s

How do surfers stay calm during a hold-down?

Most experienced surfers don’t stay calm because they can hold their breath for an exceptionally long time.

They stay calm because they’ve trained their response to stress.

Techniques such as surf apnea training, breath control exercises, CO₂ tolerance training and gradual exposure to larger surf can help surfers become more comfortable in challenging situations and reduce the likelihood of panic during a hold-down.

What is surf apnea?

Surf apnea is a specialised training technique for surfers that enhances their ability to hold their breath for extended periods.

It helps surfers remain calm and composed underwater in challenging conditions, such as wipeouts and hold-downs, by improving their lung capacity, breath control, and mental resilience.

How do surfers hold their breath for so long?

Surfers develop the ability to hold their breath for extended periods through surf apnea training. This training involves various breath-holding techniques, including diaphragmatic breathing, dry static apnea exercises, and CO₂ tables.

These gradually increase their tolerance for carbon dioxide buildup and improve their overall breath-holding capacity.

How long can surfers hold their breath?

Surfers’ breath duration varies depending on their training and experience. With proper surf apnea training, some surfers can hold their breath for several minutes, which is crucial for surviving wipeouts and hold-downs.

Is apnea training good for you?

Yes, apnea training offers numerous benefits for surfers. It enhances lung capacity, mental focus, relaxation, stress management, and overall breath control.

However, it’s essential to practice apnea training safely and under the guidance of experienced instructors to minimise risks.

How can I improve my breathing for surfing?

Improving your breathing for surfing involves practising breath-holding techniques, such as diaphragmatic breathing and dry static apnea exercises, which can enhance lung capacity and breath control.

Enrolling in surf apnea courses or working with experienced instructors can also be beneficial.

How long should I be able to hold my breath for surfing?

There isn’t a magic number.

For most surfers, the goal isn’t achieving an extreme breath-hold time but learning how to stay calm under pressure.

Many surfers find that comfortably holding their breath for one to two minutes on land is a useful benchmark, but confidence, relaxation and stress management are often more important than raw breath-hold duration.

How do you relax while surfing?

Surfers relax by staying focused, practising deep and controlled breathing, and maintaining a calm mindset. Surf apnea training can help surfers develop resilience and composure in challenging situations.

What is a hold-down in surfing?

A hold-down in surfing refers to a situation where a surfer is held underwater by a wave after wiping out or being caught in the impact zone.

It can be intense and challenging, requiring surfers to hold their breath and remain calm until they resurface.

How long can the average surfer hold their breath?

The average surfer can hold their breath for around 30 seconds to a minute without training. With proper surf apnea training, surfers can significantly extend their breath-holding capacity.

How do I start apnea training?

To start apnea training, consider enrolling in surf apnea courses led by experienced instructors. These courses provide structured training and guidance on breath-holding techniques and safety precautions.

How often should you do apnea training?

The frequency of apnea training can vary based on individual goals and preferences. Some surfers incorporate apnea training into their regular surf routine, while others may opt for dedicated training sessions a few times a week.

Regular practice is essential to maintain self control and improve breath-holding skills.

Surfboard repair refers to the process of mending damages, dings, or cracks on a surfboard. No matter how careful a surfer is, occasional damages to the board are inevitable, given the rough nature of waves and accidental impacts.

Repairs can range from simple DIY patchwork using repair kits to more complicated fixes that might require professional expertise. The primary goal of surfboard repair is to restore the board’s integrity and performance while preventing water infiltration that can damage its core.

I have a comprehensive guide to DIY repairs here.

An epoxy surfboard repair kit is a set of tools and materials specifically designed to repair damages or dings on surfboards made from epoxy resin. Epoxy boards are distinct from traditional polyester boards, and as such, they require a different type of resin for repairs.

The kit typically includes epoxy resin, hardener, fibreglass cloth, sandpaper, mixing sticks, and sometimes colour additives to match the board’s design.

These kits are essential for surfers who want to extend the life of their epoxy surfboard by fixing minor damages themselves, ensuring the board remains watertight and maintains its structural integrity.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ’S)

Ding on Surfboard

Q: Can surfboards be repaired?
A: Yes, most surfboards can be repaired. The method and materials used will depend on the type of damage and the construction of the surfboard. Common repairs include fixing dings, cracks, and broken fins.

Q: Can you fix pressure dents on a surfboard?
A: Pressure dents, which are small indentations often caused by the surfer’s feet or knees, are generally cosmetic issues and don’t affect the performance of the board significantly. While they can’t be fully “removed”, their appearance can be minimized through certain techniques. However, many surfers choose to leave them as they are, as they are a natural part of board wear.

Q: How much does it cost to fix a surfboard fin?
A: The cost to fix a surfboard fin varies based on the extent of the damage and where you get it repaired. A minor repair, like re-attaching a fin that’s come loose, might cost between $20 to $40. However, if the fin box (the slot where the fin attaches to the board) is damaged, the repair could cost anywhere from $50 to $150 or more. It’s best to get a quote from a local surf shop or repair specialist.

Q: Can foam surfboards be repaired?
A: Yes, foam surfboards (often referred to as “soft tops”) can be repaired. The process is a bit different than repairing traditional fiberglass boards. Specialized kits and materials designed for foam board repairs are available. It’s essential to ensure that the foam core doesn’t absorb water, so repairs should be done promptly to prevent further damage.
